Mitral Valve Repair

Mitral valve repair (MVR) is offered to patients who have a leaking mitral valve (mitral regurgitation). There is good evidence to show that the results are far better when this valve is repaired rather than replaced. Mario Petrou is trained and experienced in mitral valve repair techniques with a survival rate of over 99% and a repair rate of over 96%. He routinely uses an expert in ultrasound of the heart (TOE) during the operation to maximise the success rate and provide quality assurance following the repair. With a successful MVR operation, most patients can expect a marked improvement in quality of life as well as increased life expectancy. In some patients with long-standing problems it is necessary to perform additional procedures including repair of the tricuspid valve and ablation of the conducting tissue of the heart to improve the heart rhythm (AF ablation).
